Volimes

Volimes village is located 30 km northwest of the island's capital and running in the mountainous part of the island. It is the largest mountain in the area and the population of the village is basically the capital of mountain villages. The village extends from the top of the Vrachionas (Upper Volimes) and ends in the northern seas of the island (Lower Volimes). More specifically Xigia beaches, Makris Gialos, Agios Nikolaos (Schinari) belong to this village. The natural beauty will enchant you with its pine forests, olive groves, local vineyards and farms, and its crystal blue waters. The sunset in this area is impressive and beautiful for the romantic and beyond.

Do not forget to visit the monastery of St. Andrew, to admire the beautiful frescoes, many of those who survived now adorn the Scriptural Museum of Zakynthos. Also in this village is the picturesque church of Saint-George, off the cliffs, where they got the name because it was built to the steep mountainside. Also in Anafonitria, has the monastery that will conciliate with Saint-Dennis. The church of Agia Paraskevi, with remarkable pictures and paintings, is of one of the most interesting sights. It is also interesting to observe the traditional architecture of the houses and monasteries in the region. Volimes is the starting point of exploring the northern parts of the island with numerous caves, the blue sea and the well-known shipwreck.

Your stay
Volimes is not particularly tourist-developed and for this reason there is not much accommodation for your stay. The southern part of the village is well developed because of the sea. Here you can find furnished apartments. Also, in Makris Gialos beach you can find camping. Hotel units do not exist, there is only one in the nearby village of Kampi. In the last several years, luxury stone villas have been built for luxury holidays.

Transportation
Your transfer to Volimes is particularly difficult as it is an uphill road with many turns. But all the roads are asphalted and well worth visiting the area, because literally the combination of green nature in the deep blue Ionian Sea will charm you. There is bus service to Zakynthos town twice a day. Car rental companies do not exist, nor does a taxi station.

Restaurants
In Volimes you can enjoy the authentic, Zakynthos traditional cuisine. In the southern coastal part of the village, there is enough to interest all with the zakynthian appetizers. Also in the mountainous part are traditional taverns which offer only the local cuisine. These are all family restaurants, therefore their hospitality will be unforgettable.

Beaches
On the northwestern side of the island, there are beaches with crystal clear deep waters which will amaze you as they offer a unique feeling of serenity and calmness . Xigia beach is unique on the island because of the warm, medicinal water. Blue waters of Makris Gialos beach will impress you also.Agios Nikolaos is a picturesque harbor that connects the island to the neighboring island Kefalonia. All beaches are situated in picturesque bays. Also, these beaches are the closest beaches to the Blue Caves and Navagio (Shipwreck), which you can visit by boats. Navagio is a beautiful beach surrounded by white, sheer cliffs, lush and soft golden sand, resting in the clear waters of the Ionian. Access to it is only by sea. Navagio is the tourist registered trademark for Zakynthos and Greece.

Shopping
The village economy is based on farming and agricultural products. There are many shops selling gifts and souvenirs with a wide variety of artifacts, beautiful carpets, leather goods, bags, miniature pigs, ceramics, and even sweets made of honey and almond nougat. Also you can find local products such as cheese (Zakynthos gruyere, cream cheese), bread, honey, oregano, etc.

Night life
The nightlife in Volimes are the restaurants that offer Zakynthian cuisine until late at night.
